Hay un domingo al año, el que precede a las fiestas patronales de Sant Sebastià el 20 de enero, en que Palma se inunda de fotógrafos. Las calles del casco antiguo de nuestra ciudad normalmente son tranquilas y silenciosas, y más aún en domingo, pero ese día son tomadas por una horda de cámaras fotográficas ansiosas por captar cualquier movimiento, cualquier detalle llamativo, cualquier halo de luz que destaque entre las sombras. Y esto ocurre año tras año, desde hace casi tres décadas. Es el Maratón Fotográfico de Palma. En palabras de Pilar Negredo, el alma mater del Maratón Fotográfico y una persona fundamental en su organización:
El Maratón de fotos es joven y aún hay mucha luz para captar en Palma.
Puede participar cualquier persona que tenga una cámara fotográfica y ganas de pasarlo bien. Los fotógrafos participantes deben pasar por tres controles a lo largo de la mañana situados en un lugar céntrico. En cada control se anuncian los temas a fotografiar por todos los participantes, por ejemplo: “La ciudad y el mar”, “Carrer Jaume III”, “Ropa tendida”, “El tráfico en Palma”… hasta llegar a un total de seis temas. Por supuesto, ningún participante sabe de antemano los temas que debe fotografiar. ¡Es una sorpresa! Para complicarlo aún más, se establece un límite de tiempo: todas las fotos deben tomarse ese mismo día. No olvidemos que se trata de un maratón.
