Mucho se habla estos días de Annie Leibovitz, pues acaba de ser distinguida con el premio príncipe de Asturias por su gran labor fotográfica. La gran Leibovitz, una leyenda viva, una de las fotógrafas más laureadas del mundo, la artista que ha dinamizado la fotografía contemporánea y que ha dado cuenta de toda una época cultural y política. ¿Pero quién se esconde tras la cámara?
La ventanilla de un coche y el mundo desde ahí. Así transcurrió su niñez, de un lugar a otro por las carreteras de Estados Unidos debido a los continuos traslados de su padre militar. Su mirada se acostumbró así a ver la vida enmarcada tras un vidrio, el de la ventanilla del coche primero y el del objetivo de su cámara después. Poco tiempo después, se estableció en San Francisco para estudiar fotografía y, con una pequeña cámara de mano, Annie tomaba el pulso a la ciudad fotografiando todo cuanto que sucedía en las calles durante esos años convulsos del movimiento hippy, las revueltas estudiantiles contra la guerra, la juventud que gritaba paz y amor. Enseguida pasó a trabajar para la revista Rolling Stones y, más tarde, para Vanity Fair y Vogue, retratando hasta hoy los grandes iconos del mundo contemporáneo. No hay celebridad que no haya posado para ella. O mejor dicho: no eres una celebridad del todo hasta que Annie Leibovitz te retrata.
